CDC East Wins 2020 AIA Ohio Design Merit Award

September 26, 2020 // Recognition, Healthcare

Perspectus is excited to announce that the Centers for Dialysis Care East Facility received a Merit Award for Newly Completed Project at the 2020 AIA Ohio Design Awards ceremony, which was held virtually on September 24 via Zoom.

Situated in Cleveland’s University Circle neighborhood, this project is the flagship facility for this regional care provider. To support CDC’s mission of providing better, more convenient care to under-served populations, Perspectus put patient experience at the center of design. Hemodialysis (or the process of filtering blood) was conceptualized by using louvres to filter light and sightlines throughout the building.

Awards Jury Chair Brandon Pace, FAIA, said “what we liked most about [this design was] how it elevates the experience… and brings a bit of dignity to this type of treatment.”

The building reflects design on a human scale. Individual treatment bays were designed first, then used as building blocks for the plan layout and building enclosure. Clusters of bays are oriented around shared support areas to maximize staff efficiency and access to patients. Finishes provide clean lines with visual warmth, and treatment areas address patient temperature sensitivity, providing access to daylight.

In the lobby, an illuminated feature wall mimics the daylight filtered through the exterior louvres and serves as a backdrop for an open stair. The second floor features a large, multipurpose classroom that can be subdivided into smaller classrooms, as well as a training room, educator workspaces, conference rooms, and meeting spaces for staff. We are incredibly proud of this recognition as we continue to design spaces that elevate the patient experience. Congratulations to the design team, our long-time partner CDC, and all involved.
