Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine

The Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine (HCOM) at Ohio University expanded its reach to Northeast Ohio with the establishment of a branch campus at Cleveland Clinic’s South Pointe Hospital. HCOM’s goal of providing affordable care and public service to under-served populations will help transform primary care in the state of Ohio.

The team of Perspectus and DesignGroup was selected to renovate a former hospital space at South Pointe Hospital. This regional campus was specifically designed to allow for virtual connections with the University’s main campus in Athens Ohio, allowing faculty to execute their curriculum and student counseling by virtual classrooms or in person. Much of the program is devoted to smart classroom concepts which allow off-site connectivity as well as student-to-student collaboration, connecting to real time online information sources. Program elements that enhance the HCOM curriculum include large gross manipulation labs, high fidelity simulation labs, and student collaborative spaces. All spaces are designed with integrated AV and IT to enhance teaching.

Creating collaborative group study spaces and designing a welcoming “shared” entry experience for patient/students while enhancing the aesthetics of the 1957 building were important design considerations. The renovation transformed an outdated hospital space into a dynamic, state-of-the-art academic hub. Architect of Record: DesignGroup
